A Dilation and Curettage (D&C) is a medical procedure in which the cervix is dilated, and the lining of the uterus (endometrium) is scraped or suctioned out. This procedure may be performed for various reasons, including diagnostic purposes or to address certain medical conditions.

Indications for D&C:

  • Miscarriage: A D&C may be performed following a miscarriage to remove any remaining tissue from the uterus.

  • Abnormal Uterine Bleeding: D&C may be used to diagnose and treat abnormal uterine bleeding or to obtain a sample of the endometrium for further testing.

  • Uterine Polyps or Fibroids: The procedure can be employed to remove uterine polyps or fibroids.

  • Endometrial Cancer Diagnosis: D&C may be part of the diagnostic process for endometrial cancer.

  • Evaluation of Fertility Issues: D&C can be used to investigate fertility issues by assessing the health of the uterine lining.

  • Incomplete Abortion: In cases where not all pregnancy tissue is naturally expelled, a D&C may be performed to complete the process.

Steps in the D&C Process:

  • Preparation: Before the procedure, the healthcare provider may conduct a pelvic examination and may order preoperative tests, such as blood tests or imaging.

  • Anesthesia: D&C is typically performed under general anesthesia, but in some cases, local or regional anesthesia may be used.

  • Cervical Dilatation: The cervix is dilated (widened) using dilators or medication to allow access to the uterine cavity.

  • Curettage: A curette, a sharp, spoon-shaped instrument, is used to scrape the lining of the uterus. Alternatively, suction may be used to remove tissue.

  • Tissue Examination: The removed tissue is sent to a laboratory for examination, especially in cases where the procedure is performed for diagnostic purposes.

  • Recovery: After the procedure, the individual is monitored in a recovery area until the effects of anesthesia wear off. Some may experience cramping and light bleeding.

Considerations:

  • D&C is generally considered a safe procedure, but as with any medical intervention, there are potential risks. These may include infection, bleeding, injury to the uterus or other pelvic organs, and a rare risk of complications related to anesthesia.

  • Recovery time varies, and individuals may be advised to refrain from certain activities for a specified period.
